ON THE RIDE FROM MARSH HARBOUR AIRPORT TO THE ABACO CLUB on Winding Bay the driver offers guests a bottle of water. If you are thirsty and accept the courtesy, you’ll be handed a plastic bottle branded with the club’s logo and trademark parrot. There is nothing out of the ordinary with the exchange or the water bottle—except its color. The plastic is tinted a brilliant turquoise and foreshadows what is to come. After a 25-minute ride, where the driver is on the wrong side of the street—the club is on an island in the Bahamas, which was once a part of England’s Commonwealth, with UK driving customs—you arrive at the entrance to The Abaco Club.
